Corn Futures Market News and Commentary

Friday Gains for Corn Futures

The corn market traded higher ahead of the extended weekend. Old crop July got above $7.80, but closed 12 1/4 cents higher. New crop prices were a dime to 11 1/4 cents stronger on the day. Red December gained 4 1/2 cents to $6.42 1/2 cents. 

USDA’s daily Ethanol Report showed the average cash price for corn oil slipped from between 80.88-82.14 c/lb regionally last week to 80.25-81.5 cents this week. DDGS FOB prices were firm in the Gulf from $290-$305/ton as PNW offers increased from $358 to $365. 

CFTC’s weekly report showed a 48,242 contract reduction in managed money’s net position for corn futures and options through the week that ended 5/24. That wk/wk reduction, from 340k contracts to 291.4k, was mainly fueled by 30.9k corn spec longs being closed. Commercial hedgers also reduced exposure through the week, buying back 54.8k contracts for a 58k lighter net short of 635,456 contracts.
