Barchart Dashboard is a one-page application that allows you to view a full-sized chart and news for symbols in your Watchlists, Portfolios, and from Major Markets pages.
Dashboard was designed to offer a one-page solution for watching the symbols you've identified as being of interest. Available when viewing the site on a desktop computer or tablet, it opens in a new browser window allowing you to keep the Barchart.com website open in another window to research and monitor other market developments.
Using the tabbed Controller in the right column, you can select a list of symbols from the Markets, Watchlist, or Portfolio tab for review on the chart. You may also enter a symbol not found on one of the lists at the top of the controller.
The Dashboard shows "mini-charts" of each symbol on your selected list at the top of the page (a Barchart Premier feature), and lets you scroll through each symbol on the list to display a full-sized, customizable chart along with news relevant to the symbol.
You can resize the content areas on the Dashboard to adjust the size of each container, hide the right menu (the Controller), and Barchart Premier members may hide the mini-chart scroller at the top for additional viewing space. Dashboard also remembers your last-viewed settings, so when you open Dashboard the next day, you are brought to the point where you left the application.
Dashboard also lets you "expand" any symbol to view additional quote, performance, fundamental, and key statistics data.
Note: A video tutorial of Dashboard's features is available directly from Dashboard. Just click the video icon immediately to the left of the Help icon to launch the video.
Dashboard has 5 distinct content areas. While the mini-charts is a fixed position, you can resize the other content areas by dragging and dropping the control bars around the content.
Scrolling Mini-Charts: Barchart Premier users will see a scrolling "mini-chart" widget at the top of their Dashboard, giving a snapshot of today's price activity for each symbol on the list. To show/hide the mini-chart widget, click the arrow in the blue bar (by the Barchart logo) at the top left of your browser window. For free site members, an advertisement is displayed in lieu of the mini-charts in a fixed position at the top of the application.
The Controller (Right Column)
The right column on Dashboard contains a three-tabbed "Controller" - Markets, Watchlist, and Portfolio. When you select a list from one of the Controller tabs, you are directing the Dashboard to modify what you see in the application. Upon selection of a list, Dashboard:
- loads all the symbols in the list into the scrolling mini-chart widget
- loads the first symbol in the list in the large chart
- displays quote information for the first symbol in the list
- displays news headlines for the first symbol in the list.
You can click on a new symbol in the list OR in the mini-chart widget to advance to that symbol's chart, quote and news. In addition, the area at the top of the Controller allows you to enter any valid symbol not found on the list.
The Markets tab has five fixed lists: Major Markets (indices), Stock Market Leaders (the top 12 Price Volume Leaders), Major Commodities (commodities listed on the Futures Market Overview page), Forex Markets (contracts listed on the Forex Market Overview page), and Major ETFs (symbols listed on the ETFs Market Overview page).
The Watchlist and Portfolio tabs allow you to view any list you've created on the Barchart.com site.
Symbol Quote Data: At the top of the Controller, you will see the selected symbol's price data. For U.S. equities, prices displayed are realtime BATS exchange prices, along with bid and ask data. For all other symbols, we display delayed data, per exchange rules.
Once a symbol has been selected, you can click on the symbol or symbol name to open a widget that lets you view additional quote, performance, fundamental, and key statistics data.
Full-sized Chart: The left portion of the Dashboard is the area where your full-sized chart appears. You will see either an Interactive or a Technical Chart (depending on your Site Preferences). Each chart is fully customizable using the Quick Chart links, chart templates, or by adjusting the individual chart settings.
Streaming Chart Updates
For Interactive Chart Users: When the market is in session, the Dashboard chart will automatically stream new price data into the chart. For U.S. equities, you may also select either streaming real-time BATS prices or streaming delayed data for the chart. This option is found in the chart Settings / Display menu. For all other types of symbols (international equities, futures, forex), the chart will also stream new updates automatically, but the data is delayed, per exchange rules.
In addition, Barchart saves the tools you apply to each chart such as trend lines and annotations.
IMPORTANT: Streaming, realtime BATS data for U.S. equities, streaming delayed data, and chart tools are not available with Technical Charts.
For Technical Chart Users: You will always see a static delayed data chart.
Once a symbol is selected in the Controller, the most recent headlines for that symbol are displayed in the right column at the bottom of the Controller. Click on any headline to open the story. You can advance to the Next or Previous story, or close the story window to return to the Dashboard.
