Watchlists allow you to create a "collection" of symbols you want to follow. Using various Barchart tools, you can analyze the symbols in your Watchlist in different ways. While the most common way to view a Watchlist is with a "table view", FlipCharts allow you to look at each symbol separately in chart view, using any custom chart template you create.
A free site membership allows you to create up to 20 Watchlists, while Barchart Premier Members may create unlimited Watchlists.
The page will always display the last Watchlist you've viewed. To change the Watchlist being viewed, use the drop-down list at the top of the page. To sort the order in which the Watchlists appear in the drop-down list at the top of the page, use "Organize Watchlists" found under "MANAGE TOOLS" in the My Barchart section.
The Watchlist can be viewed using either Intraday or End-of-Day data. Intraday prices will always show the current session's prices. End-of-Day prices show the previous session's data. The "Time" column indicates when the data was last updated.
For the Intraday view, new price data appear on the page as indicated by a "flash". Stocks: 15 minute delay (Cboe BZX data for U.S. equities is real-time), ET. Volume reflects consolidated markets. Futures and Forex: 10 or 15 minute delay, CT.
Create a New Watchlist
To create a new Watchlist, click the "New Watchlist" button at the top of the page. A free site membership allows you to create up to 20 Watchlists, while Barchart Premier Members may create unlimited Watchlists. Each Watchlist can hold up to 1000 rows (a row consists of either a symbol or a "blank" separator).
Once a Watchlist is created, click the "Edit" button to
- change the Watchlist name
- add, edit, or delete symbols or blank rows for visual separation
- change the order in which the symbols display on the Watchlist
- identify the Default View to use when displaying the Watchlist
- identify whether you wish to receive an End-of-Day Email recap for the Watchlist
- select to receive a .csv attachment of your Watchlist for import to a 3rd party spreadsheet (Barchart Premier feature)
- delete the Watchlist entirely
Add Symbols to a Watchlist
You may add one or more symbols (using a comma-separated or space-separated string) with the symbol entry form at the top of the Watchlist page. Additionally, you may add a symbol to any Watchlist from the symbol's quote page.
New additions to the Watchlist are automatically added to the bottom of the table. You may change the sort order of the Watchlist entries using the "Edit Watchlist" page.
Watchlists can be analyzed using "Views." A View simply presents the symbols on the page with a different set of columns. Site members can also display the page using Custom Views. When you create a Watchlist, you are asked to set a Default View. The Default View for your Watchlist always supersedes a site-wide Default View you may have set in your Preferences.
Each View has a "Links" column on the far right to access a symbol's Quote Overview, Chart, Options Quotes (when available), Barchart Opinion, and Technical Analysis page. Standard Views found throughout the site include:
- Main View: Symbol, Name, Last Price, Change, Percent Change, High, Low, Volume, and Time of Last Trade.
- Technical View: Symbol, Name, Last Price, Today's Opinion, 20-Day Relative Strength, 20-Day Historic Volatility, 20-Day Average Volume, 52-Week High and 52-Week Low.
- Performance View: Symbol, Name, Last Price, Weighted Alpha, YTD Percent Change, 1-Month, 3-Month and 1-Year Percent Change.
- Extended Hours: For U.S. equities only, this view will show any pre- or post-market price activity.
Available only with a Premier Membership, you can base a screener off of any Watchlist. Most site members use Watchlists to follow and monitor market activity for a group of symbols. Using the "Screen" button, the symbols from a Watchlist are pulled into the Stocks Screener where you can add filters to further narrow down the candidates.
Example: Screen your Watchlist for the symbols whose 20-Day Moving Average is greater than the Last Price, and where the TrendSpotter signal is Strengthening. Or screen a Watchlist to find which symbols have a Last Price is within 2% of their 1-Month Low Price. You can then save the Screener, and run it again at a later date to further analyze your Watchlist for trade opportunities. Since the saved Screener was created based on a Watchlist, it will always start with the most current set of symbols found on that Watchlist before applying your custom filters and displaying new results.
Note: The "Screen" link automatically opens the Stocks Screener. As a result, a Watchlist that contains a mix of asset classes will only see the stocks symbols pulled into the screener. If your Watchlist contains other asset classes (ETFs or Mutual Funds), you can still screen on your Watchlist. Open the ETF or Mututal Funds Screener, and add the filter "Lists => Watchlists".
Unique to Barchart, FlipCharts allow you to scroll through all the symbols on the table using a chart view. While viewing FlipCharts, you can apply a custom Chart Template, for further technical analysis. FlipCharts are a free tool available to Site Members.
Download is a free tool available to Site Members. This tool will download a .csv file for the View being displayed. Free members are limited to 10 downloads per day, while Barchart Premier Members may download up to 100 .csv files per day. Should you require more than 50 downloads per day, please contact Barchart Sales at 866-333-7587 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or additional options about historical market data.
The Pop-out icon opens the Watchlist in a new browser window, giving you maximum screen width to view the table using your Custom Views. With the Watchlist open in a new browser window, you can continue to use the Barchart.com website in a different browser window. Changes made to a pop-out Watchlist are always saved.
Notes / High-Low Price Alerts
Each symbol can contain text Notes, and you may also set a High or Low price alert. The Notes icon is located to the left of the "Links". Hover over the Notes icon to view the details, or click on the Notes icon to add/edit/delete the information. When the Notes icon is white, this indicates that no data has been entered for the symbol. When dark grey, there are notes or High-Low Price alerts set.
High-Low price alerts will simply color the Notes icon when the current price of the symbol goes above or below the price you set. If an alert triggers, the Notes icon will flash green (for High Price alert) or red (for Low Price alert).
The "Notes" column is removed from any Custom View you use on your Watchlist table.
Data Table Expand
Unique to Barchart.com, data tables contain an "expand" option. Click the "+" icon in the first column (on the left) to "expand" the table for the selected symbol. Scroll through widgets of the different content available for the symbol. Click on any of the widgets to go to the full page.
Horizontal Scroll on Wide Tables
Especially when using a Custom View, you may find that the number of columns chosen exceeds the available space to show all the data. In this case, the table must be horizontally scrolled (left to right) to view all of the information. To do this, you can either scroll to the bottom of the table and use the table's scrollbar, or you can scroll the table using your browser's built-in scroll:
- Left-click with your mouse anywhere on the table.
- Use your keyboard's left and right arrows to scroll the table.
- Repeat this anywhere as you move through the table to enable horizontal scrolling.
Note: You may also try using the Pop-out option to view your Watchlist in a new, full-screen browser window.
