S&P 500 Financials Futures Market News and Commentary

Stock Indexes Close Moderately Higher on a Rally in Technology Stocks

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Friday closed up +1.60%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed up +1.34%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed up +2.34%.

U.S. stock indexes on Friday posted moderate gains. The strength in technology stocks on Friday lifted the overall market. Also, hopes for a new pandemic stimulus plan fueled a rally in stocks Friday after Democrats revised their stimulus proposal, and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin signaled he's ready to negotiate anew.

Friday's U.S. economic data was mixed for stocks. U.S. Aug durable goods orders rose +0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of +1.5% m/m. Also, Apr durables ex-transportation rose +0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of +1.0% m/m. Conversely, Aug capital goods orders nondefense ex-aircraft, a proxy for capital spending, rose +1.8% m/m, stronger than expectations of +1.0% m/m.
