U.S. Stock Indexes Settle Sharply Lower on Soaring Global Bond Yields and Weaker-Than-Expected U.S. Data

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Thursday closed down -2.45%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed down -1.75%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed down -3.56%.

U.S stock indexes on Thursday settled sharply lower. A surge in global bond yields on Thursday weighed on stocks, along with mostly weaker than expected U.S. economic data. A sell-off in technology stocks Thursday kept the pressure on stock indexes throughout the day as investors moved out of the technology stocks that surged during the height of the pandemic.

A surge in global government bond yields on Thursday was negative for stocks. The 10-year T-note soared to a 1-year high Thursday of 1.609%. Also, the 10-year UK gilt yield rose to an 11-month high Thursday of 0.829%, and the 10-year German bund yield jumped to an 11-month high of -0.216%. Finally, the Japan 10-year JGB bond yield rose to a 2-1/4 year high Thursday of 0.154%.
