Lean Hogs Futures Market News and Commentary

Hogs Fall Back Weaker on Thursday

Lean hog futures saw losses of 25 cents to $1.27 in the front months on Thursday, with the deferreds mixed. USDA’s national base hog price was reported at $92.34 in the Thursday PM report, up 24 cents from the day prior. The CME Lean Hog Index was down another 82 cents on August 18 at $93.96.

Weekly Export Sales data showed 27,275 MT of pork sold for 2026 in the week ending on August 13, a 5-week low. Mexico was the buyer of 10,700 MT, with 3,500 MT sold to South Korea. Shipments were pegged at 27,820 MT, also a 5-week low. The lead destination was Mexico at 13,000 MT, with 3,200 MT destined for Japan.

USDA’s pork carcass cutout value was down $1.09s in the Thursday afternoon report, at $96.49. The loin and butt primals were the only reported higher. USDA estimated federally inspected hog slaughter for Thursday at 451,000 head, with the weekly total at 1.882 million head. That is 14,000 head above the previous week and down 25,769 head from the same week last year.
