Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Red at Midday

Cattle futures are trading $0.25 to $0.60 lower at midday. Feeders are also in the red with $0.50 to $1.10 losses. The FCE reported 1 sale of 128 TX heifers for $163 in their Wednesday auction. Cash trade for the week remains unestablished. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 3/20 was $187.78, which was 23 cents lower.

USDA’s wholesale Boxed Beef prices were mixed in the AM report as the spread widened back to $12.60. Choice boxes were up by $2.28 to $282.20, and Select boxes dropped by $1.95. USDA estimated Tuesday’s FI cattle slaughter at 127,000 head. That put the week’s running total at 252k head matching last week and 12k above the same week last year.
