Expectations for Abundant Sugar Supplies Pressures Prices

July NY world sugar #11 (SBN25) Friday closed down -0.08 (-0.48%), and August London ICE white sugar #5 (SWQ25) closed up +1.90 (+0.41%).

Sugar prices on Friday extended their two-month-long selloff, with NY sugar posting a nearly 4-year nearest-futures low and London sugar posting a 3-3/4 year low.   Expectations for a global sugar surplus are hammering prices.  On May 22, the USDA, in its biannual report, projected that global 2025/26 sugar production would increase by +4.7% year-over-year (y/y) to a record 189.318 million metric tons (MMT), with a global sugar surplus of 41.188 MMT, up 7.5% year-over-year.

However, sugar prices recovered from their worst levels Friday, with London sugar turning higher as a rally in WTI crude oil (CLN25) to a 1-1/2 month high sparked some short covering in sugar futures.  Higher crude prices benefit ethanol prices, which may prompt the world's sugar mills to divert more cane crushing toward ethanol production rather than sugar, thus re...
