Natural Gas Futures Market News and Commentary

Natural Gas Market News and Commentary

Jan Nymex natural gas (NGF19) on Thursday closed down by -0.012 (-0.29%). Nat-gas prices dropped to a 2-week low Thursday after the EIA reported U.S. nat-gas inventories fell -77 bcf, less than expectations of -80 bcf. Nat-gas prices have been under pressure this week as forecasts for above-normal temperatures in the U.S. prompted fund selling of nat-gas futures. NOAA is forecasting warmer-than-normal temperatures across most of the U.S. from Dec 18-22 with the Midwest seeing extreme seasonal warmth Dec 16-20. Prices recovered from their worst levels Thursday on signs of stronger nat-gas demand after Radiant Solutions reported that the Nov 1-Dec 12 period ranks as the 6th coldest for the period from records going back to 1950. Also, U.S. nat-gas production has fallen for a third day as today's data showed that U.S. natural gas production in the lower 48 states fell to 79.192 million cfd, a 4-1/2 month low. U.S. nat-gas inventories remain tight at 2.914 bcf as of Dec 7, -19.9% below the 5-year average and -19.6% y/y and the lowest seasonally since 2002.
