Live Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Closed Mostly Lower

Front month cattle futures were firmer on Monday. April cattle futures traded $1.75 lower, while the other front months were 35 cents lower to 17 cents higher. Futures will trade with normal limits tomorrow. Feeder cattle futures ended the Monday session with 2 to 55 cent losses, April the weakest. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up another $2.13 to $132.57 on 03/27. The cash cattle trade has yet to establish for the week. Wholesale boxed beef prices were lower in the afternoon update. Choice boxes were down by $1.87 to $250.97 cwt. Select boxes were $4.24 lower to $238.14 cwt. USDA estimated Monday’s FI cattle slaughter at 120,000 head. That is 4,000 head more wk/wk and 2,000 head more than the same week last year.
