Dollar Weakness Spurs Short Covering in Cocoa Futures

March ICE NY cocoa (CCH26) today is up +118 (+3.98%), and March ICE London cocoa #7 (CAH26) is up +137 (+6.44%).

Cocoa prices are sharply higher today as dollar weakness spurred technical short covering in cocoa futures, after cocoa prices reached deeply oversold levels following this week's plunge.

On Thursday, cocoa prices extended their six-week-long selloff, sinking to 2.75-year nearest-futures lows.  International cocoa buyers are reluctant to pay official farm-gate prices for beans in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, as those prices are much higher than current world prices.  The lack of buyers is boosting supplies as ICE cocoa inventories rose to a 5.25-month high of 2,087,755 bags on Thursday.

Last week, Ghana cut the official price it pays its cocoa farmers by nearly 30% for supplies for the 2025/26 growing season, and Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Ivory Coast is considering a similar cut.  The Ivory Coast and Ghana produce more than half of the world's... Read more
