White Sugar #5 Futures Market News and Commentary

Stronger Sugar Output in Brazil Pressures Sugar Prices

October NY world sugar #11 (SBV25) on Wednesday closed down -0.14 (-0.84%), and October London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV25) closed down -5.30 (-1.12%).

Sugar prices were under pressure Wednesday on signs of stronger global sugar production in Brazil after Brazil's ministry of agriculture and livestock said that sugar output totaled almost 3.4 MMT over the last 15 days.

Losses in sugar prices were limited on Wednesday after the price of WTI crude oil (CLU25) rose to a 5-week high, which benefits ethanol prices and may prompt the world's sugar mills to divert cane crushing toward ethanol production rather than sugar, thus curbing sugar supplies.

Signs that the recent slide in sugar prices to 4-year lows has sparked a pickup in demand are positive for sugar prices.  China's June sugar imports soared by 1,435% to 420,000 MT.  Also, President Trump last Wednesday said Coca-Cola agreed to use cane sugar in Coke beverages sold in the US instead of high-fructose corn syrup,...
