White Sugar #5 Futures Market News and Commentary

Sugar Prices Fall Back Towards Wednesday's 1-1/4 Year Low

October NY world sugar #11 (SBV24) Friday closed down -0.24 (-1.29%), and Oct London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV24) closed down -4.70 (-0.88%).

NY sugar prices Friday traded lower and fell back towards Wednesday's 1-1/4 year low.  Sugar prices have plunged in the past month due to increased Brazilian sugar production, the prospects for improved rain in India and Thailand, and estimates for a 2024/25 global sugar surplus.

Sugar prices on Thursday saw a temporary rally due to news from Unica that Brazil's Center-South sugar output in the first half of July fell -9.7% y/y to 2.939 MMT.  However Center-South sugar production in the marketing year through mid-July was still up by +10.4% y/y at 17.140 MMT.

StoneX said Wednesday that it expects a global sugar surplus of 1.2 million MT for the 2024/25 season (Oct/Sep), down from its 2023/24 surplus estimate of 4.6 million MT.  Covrig Analytics said last Wednesday that it expects a 2024/25 global sugar surplus of +182,000 MT, v... Read more
