Robusta Coffee 10-T Futures Market News and Commentary

Coffee Prices Post Moderate Gains on Dollar Weakness

March arabica coffee (KCH25) Wednesday closed up +8.50 (+2.64%), and March ICE robusta coffee (RMH25) closed up +49 (+1.01%).

Coffee prices Wednesday recovered from early losses and settled moderately higher as a weaker dollar (DXY00) prompted short covering in coffee futures.  

Dry conditions in Brazil also support coffee prices as arabica coffee climbed to a 3-week high Monday when Somar Meteorologia reported that Brazil's biggest arabica coffee growing area of Minas Gerais received 29.6 mm of rain last week, or only 31% of the historical average.  

On Wednesday, robusta posted a 2-week low before rebounding on signs of bigger supplies from Vietnam.  Last Friday, the General Department of Vietnam Customs reported that Vietnam Dec coffee exports surged +102.6% y/y to 127,655 MT.  

An increase in inventories is also bearish for coffee prices after ICE-monitored arabica coffee inventories rose to a 2-1/2 year high last Monday of 993,562 bags.  Also, ICE-monito... Read more
