Crude Oil WTI Futures Market News and Commentary

Crude Oil Settles Lower on Dollar Strength and Weak Stocks

March WTI crude oil (CLH22) on Monday closed down -1.83 (-2.15%), and March RBOB gasoline (RBH22) closed down -4.44 (-1.81%).

WTI crude oil and RBOB gasoline prices Monday dropped to 1-week lows and closed moderately lower.  A rally in the dollar index Monday to a 2-week high undercut energy prices.  Also, a sell-off in the S&P 500 to a 7-month low Monday undercut confidence in the economic outlook and prompted long liquidation in most commodities, including crude oil.

Monday's global economic data was mixed for energy demand and crude prices.  On the bearish side, the U.S. Jan Markit manufacturing PMI fell -2.7 to 55.0, weaker than expectations of 56.7 and the slowest pace of expansion in 15 months.  Also, the Eurozone Jan Markit composite PMI fell -0.9 to 52.5, weaker than expectations of 52.6 and the slowest pace of expansion in 11 months.  On the positive side, the Japan Jan Jibun Bank manufacturing PMI rose +0.3 o 54.6, the fastest pace of expansion in 4 years.  Als...
