Live Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Turnaround Tuesday for Cattle Market

Live cattle futures are falling back after Monday gains. Midday losses are limited to 75 cents, with Oct the weakest. August options expire on Friday. Feeder cattle futures are also in the red so far, with midday losses of 7 to 40 cents. The July 31 CME Feeder Cattle index was $139.80, up $1.22. In KS some light trading took place at $99 and at $100. There were no cash cattle sales reported on Monday. Last week the bulk of cash sales were at $97 in the South, and mostly $100 in the North. Tomorrow’s FCE online cattle auction has 1,474 head listed so far. There are 336 heifers from OK, but the remaining cattle are from TX and KS. Brazilian beef exports reached 169,200 MT in July, that was up 27% from July ’19. Wholesale boxed beef prices were mixed in the AM update on Tuesday. Choice boxes were up by 22 cents, with Select boxes 15 cents weaker, and the Chc/Sel spread widened by 37 cents to $14.64. USDA estimated Monday’s FI cattle slaughter at 113,000 head.
