Sugar #11 Futures Market News and Commentary

Sugar Prices Finish Lower as the Supply Outlook Improves

March NY world sugar #11 (SBH25) Friday closed down -0.17 (-0.81%), and March London ICE white sugar #5 (SWH25) closed down -5.00 (-0.94%).

Sugar prices Friday added to Thursday's losses, with NY sugar falling to a 2-3/4 month low and London sugar dropping to a 1-month low.  Brazil has recently ramped up its sugarcane crush, weighing on sugar prices.  On Thursday, Unica reported that Brazil crushed 20.35 MMT of sugarcane in the second half of November, above expectations of 15.5 MMT.  

An improved global supply outlook is also undercutting sugar prices.  On November 21, the International Sugar Organization (ISO) lowered its 2024/25 global sugar deficit forecast to -2.51 MMT, compared to an August forecast of -3.58 MMT.  ISO also raised its 2023/24 global sugar surplus estimate to 1.31 MMT from an August projection of +200,000 MT.
