Cotton #2 Futures Market News and Commentary

Cotton Trading Mostly Red at Midday

Front month cotton futures are trading with midday losses of 44 to 251 points – save the thin October contract which is 43 points in the black so far. They were lower on Wednesday, pulling back from early week gains and closing the Tuesday chart gap. Contracts were down 251 to 429 points. It was simple profit taking in our opinion, in an overbought market that needed to take a breather and see what the rally has done to mill and export demand. 

USDA’s weekly Export Sales report showed 49,522 RBs of cotton were sold for the first full week of the 22/23 season. Another 10k RBs of 22/23 cotton was also added to the books. Shipments from the week were 267,374 RBs for a season total of 448,633. Last year had 411.7k RBs shipped through the second week of the season. 

China’s Customs data had 120k MT of cotton imports for July. That was down 17% from July ’21.
