The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -2.04%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -1.63%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -2.86%.
U.S stock indexes on Tuesday closed sharply lower, with the S&P 500 falling to a 1-week low and the Nasdaq 100 dropping to a 2-1/4 month low. Stocks opened lower Tuesday morning on rising Treasury yields after the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-1/4 month high. Stocks extended their losses after a gauge of U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly fell to a 7-month low, and after Fed Chair Powell and Treasury Secretary Yellen warned of "catastrophic" results from a failure by Congress to raise the debt limit to avert a default on U.S. obligations.
