NY Cocoa Rises on Pre-Weekend Short Covering

September ICE NY cocoa (CCU25) on Friday closed up +118 (+1.46%), and September ICE London cocoa #7 (CAU25) closed down -5 (-0.09%)

Cocoa prices on Friday closed mixed, with London cocoa posting an 8.5-month low.  Cocoa prices recovered from their worst levels, with NY cocoa pushing into positive territory, as some pre-weekend short covering emerged in cocoa futures.  

Cocoa prices have sold off over the past month on signs of weak demand and higher global cocoa production, with NY cocoa posting a 2.5-month low Monday and London cocoa posting an 8.5-month nearest-futures low Friday.

Demand concerns are weighing on cocoa prices after chocolate maker Barry Callebaut AG on Thursday reduced its sales volume guidance for a second time in three months, citing persistent cocoa price volatility.  The company projects a decline in full-year sales volume and said it "saw its largest decline in a decade in the third quarter."
