Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Thursday Cattle Strengthen

The cattle market strengthened by $1.07 to $1.50 on the day. That comes on following 6 consecutive losses for a net $4 loss (December). Central Stockyards reported 146 of the 922 head were sold for $143.50. Thursday’s cash market was mostly light with sales from $143 - $147. The bulk of Northern trade remains near $144-$145. Feeder cattle futures were $2.32 to $2.55 higher on the day. September feeder cattle rolled off the board at $175.97. The 9/28 CME Feeder Cattle Index dropped $1.52 to $175.94. 

Weekly beef export sales were 21k MT from the week that ended 9/22. That was 41% higher on the week and was the most since 7/21. South Korea and China were the top buyers according to the report. Beef exports from the week were 18k MT for a YTD total of 701k MT. 

Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were $1.47 lower for Choice to $246.08 and 57 cents stronger for Select to $219.78. USDA estimated the week to date cattle slaughter as 507k head through Thursday. That was down by 2,000 f... Read more
