Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Thursday Cattle Weaken

Jan feeder cattle rolled off the board at $179.57 to be settled against the index. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 1/25 was $1.20 higher at $178.80. The other feeder cattle futures were down by $0.90 to $1.35. Live cattle also closed red on Thursday with losses of $0.62 to $1.02. Thursday’s FCE auction saw $154 bids for the 1,406 head listed. There were no sales reported with asks of $157. USDA confirmed some Thursday cash trade from $152 to $155, though volumes remain too light to establish a trend for the week. 

Beef export bookings were 25,135 MT for the week that ended 1/19. That was 76% higher than the same week that ended last year, and was also 45% higher wk/wk. South Korea was the top buyer with 10k MT purchased on the week. Beef shipments are at 40,564 MT for the season through 1/19. 

USDA’s Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were at $268.75 in Choice, up by 47 cents, and $251.48 in Select, down by 32 cents, for Thursday afternoon. Federally inspected cattle slaughter... Read more
