Cocoa Prices Rally as Volatility Continues

September ICE NY cocoa (CCU24) Friday closed up +233 (+2.99%), and September ICE London cocoa #7 (CAU24) closed up +120 (+1.88%).

Cocoa prices Friday traded sharply higher as volatility continued in summer trading.  Cocoa prices on Monday rallied sharply on concern about Ghana's plan to ration cocoa supplies for the new marketing season due to doubts about a recovery in the size of Ghana's cocoa crop.  Ghana is the world's second-largest cocoa producer.  However, cocoa prices then fell back mid-week due to concern about demand after chocolate maker Lindt & Spruengli AG on Tuesday warned of lower chocolate demand due to high prices.

Cocoa prices have recently been undercut by improved growing conditions in West Africa.  Maxar Technologies last week forecasted rain for most of the cocoa-growing regions of West Africa, "keeping soil moisture favorable for crop growth."  However, the rain is also creating favorable conditions for disease attacks and is making it difficult fo...
