Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary
At the close for the midweek session, live cattle futures were $0.50 to $0.67 in the red. For December contracts that was the first red candle of the month, though futures are still 98 cents higher MTD. The weekly FCE auction saw no sales for the 1,849 head listed. Feedlots were asking $141 - $143.50, while bids were capped at $139.50. USDA reported additional light $140 - $141 trade in the North for Wednesday, while Southern trade remains unestablished. Feeder cattle closed with triple digit losses on Wednesday, with April down the most showing a $1.70 loss. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $160.96 on 12/6, up by 53 cents.
Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were weaker again on Wednesday, as Choice was $3.92 weaker and Select was down $2.59. USDA estimated FI cattle slaughter at 367,000 head for the week through Wednesday. That is 2,000 head more wk/wk and outpaces the same week last year by 13,000 head.
