Coffee Prices Settle Lower in Hopes Strait of Hormuz Could Soon Be Reopened

May arabica coffee (KCK26) on Wednesday closed down -1.75 (-0.55%), and May ICE robusta coffee (RMK26) closed down -33 (-0.90%).

Coffee prices settled lower on Wednesday as long liquidation emerged in coffee futures amid hopes that US-Iran diplomacy will soon end the war in Iran and allow for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.  

On Tuesday, arabica rallied to a 7-week high as coffee farmers in Brazil are holding back supplies in hopes of higher prices, leading to tightness in the coffee cash market.  

Also, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global shipping and tightened global coffee supplies.  The closure of the waterway has increased global shipping rates, insurance, and fuel costs, and raises costs for coffee importers and roasters.

Robusta coffee has support from tighter inventories, as ICE robusta inventories fell to a 2.25-month low of 4,211 lots on Monday.
