Precious Metals Settle Higher on Safe-Haven Demand from U.S-Iran Tensions

Jun Comex gold (GCM19) on Monday closed up by +1.6 (+0.13%) and May silver (SIK19) closed up by +0.020 (+0.13%). Precious metals settled higher Monday due to a weaker dollar and increased safe-haven demand from rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Tensions rose after a senior Iranian military official warned that Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway vital for crude exports from the Middle East, if Iran is prevented from exporting crude. The U.S. on Monday announced that it will not renew waivers that let countries buy Iranian crude without facing U.S. sanctions. Gains in silver were limited Monday on industrial metal demand concerns after U.S. March existing home sales fell -4.9% to 5.21 million, weaker than expectations of -3.8% to 5.30 million. June gold last Thursday slumped to a 3-3/4 month low on fund selling. Long liquidation of precious metals picked up last week after the S&P 500 rallied to a 6-1/2 month high. Long gold positions in ETFs fell to a 3-1/2 month low Friday and long silver positions in ETFs fell to a 5-week low last Wednesday.
