The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) this morning is down by -1.00%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) is down -0.99%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) is down -0.90%.
U.S. stock indexes are falling for a third day with the S&P 500 at a 2-1/4 month low, the Dow Jones Industrials at a 2-1/2 month low, and Nasdaq 100 at a 1-3/4 month low. Stocks continue to weaken as the market discounts slower economic growth due to the spread of the coronavirus beyond China. Confirmed cases of the virus are now reported at 80,336 in more than 30 countries, with 2,704 deaths.
U.S. stock indexes had opened higher in overnight trade on optimism about the development of treatments for the China coronavirus. Moderna surged 13% this morning after it said it had sent the first batch of its vaccine to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to be used in a planned Phase 1 study to prevent the coronavirus.
