Strength in Tech Stocks Leads the Market Higher as T-Note Yields Fall

What you need to know…

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) this morning is up +0.97%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.80%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +1.49%.

U.S. stocks this morning are moderately higher.  A decline in T-note yields today is giving technology stocks a boost.  Also, stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings results today from Alcoa, Signet, and Travelers have bolstered optimism about Q4 corporate earnings and is a positive factor for equities.  After this morning’s mixed U.S. economic data on weekly jobless claims and Jan Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey, stock indexes maintained moderate gains.

Today’s U.S. economic data was mixed for stocks.  On the positive side, the U.S. Jan Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey rose +7.8 to 23.2, stronger than expectations of 19.0.  Conversely, weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +55,000 to a 3-month high of 286,000, showing a weaker labor market...
