S&P 500 VIX Futures Market News and Commentary
The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Thursday closed up +0.30%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed up +0.20%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed up +0.58%.
U.S. stock indexes on Thursday fluctuated between moderate gains and moderate losses the entire day and finally settled higher. Mixed U.S. economic data and negative Fed comments weighed on stocks early Thursday, but the indexes recovered their losses and moved higher Thursday afternoon on optimism that pandemic stimulus talks will resume.
Thursday's U.S. economic data was mixed for stocks. Weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +4,000 to 870,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of a decline to 840,000. Conversely, Aug new home sales unexpectedly rose +4.8% m/m to a nearly 14-year high of 1.011 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 890,000.
