Natural Gas Prices Slightly Higher on Forecasts for Heat to Return Later this Month

Sep Nymex natural gas (NGU20) today is up +0.004 (+0.19%).

Sep nat-gas prices this morning are slightly higher on forecasts for above-average temperatures to cover the U.S. later this month. The Commodity Weather Group said today that the Northeast will be above normal over the next 5 days before falling to seasonable levels between Aug 18-22, but that above-average temperatures will cover the lower 48 states during Aug 23-27. The above-average temperatures should boost nat-gas demand from utilities to power air conditioners.

Temperatures during July were the hottest in 20 years, according to BNEF. Also, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center recently forecast warmer-than-normal temperatures across the U.S. from August to October.

Nat-gas prices fell back from their best levels today after weekly EIA nat-gas inventories rose +58 bcf, above consensus of +56 bcf, and well above the 5-year average for this time of year of +44 bcf.
