After an early session drop, lean hog futures climbed back in the afternoon session to close mixed within 32 cents of UNCH. The August contract went home as the outlier, having given back $1.05 on the day. The National Average Afternoon Base hog price was up $3.74 to $98.25. The CME Lean Hog Index was up 36 cents on 2/24 to $98.40. Â
Pork cutout futures closed the midweek session 32 cents to $1.07 in the red. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout Value from Wednesday’s PM report was $108.42 after a 23 cent bump. Federally inspected hog slaughter for the week through Wednesday was estimated at 1.414 million head. That trails last week’s pace by 9,000 head and trails the same week last year by 69k head.Â
