Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Biogen Inc. (BIIB) discovers, develops, manufactures, and delivers therapies for treating neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. With a market cap of $31.4 billion, the company’s products address diseases such as multiple sclerosis, non-hodgkin's lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis, crohn's disease, and psoriasis.
Shares of this leading biotechnology company have notably outperformed the broader market over the past year. BIIB has gained 59.6% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 20.2%. In 2026, BIIB stock is up 25.9%, surpassing the SPX’s 12.6% rise on a YTD basis.
Narrowing the focus, BIIB’s underperformance is apparent compared to the iShares Neuroscience and Healthcare ETF (IBRN). The exchange-traded fund has gained about 68.6% over the past year. However, the stock’s gains on a YTD basis slightly outshine the ETF’s 25.8% returns over the same time frame.
BIIB outperformed as strong commercial execution and a shift to growth products offset legacy MS declines. CEO Christopher Viehbacher noted the growth portfolio now exceeds the MS business for the first time, driven by rapid uptake of high-dose SPINRAZA and immediate contributions from newly acquired Apellis products SYFOVRE and Empaveli. A new subcutaneous Alzheimer’s home-dosing option and faster international SPINRAZA conversion also helped. Management raised non-GAAP EPS guidance on expected launch growth and five upcoming Phase 3 readouts in lupus, transplant, and rare diseases. Integration is tracking to $250 million in run-rate synergies by 2027 as Biogen invests in a broader pipeline beyond neurology.
On Jul. 29, BIIB shares rose 1.8% after reporting its Q2 results. Its revenue stood at $2.7 billion, up 3.4% year over year. The company’s adjusted EPS declined 34.2% from the year-ago quarter to $3.60.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect BIIB’s EPS to decline 18.9% to $12.39 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is impressive. It beat the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 34 analysts covering BIIB stock, the consensus is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on 20 “Strong Buy” ratings, two “Moderate Buys,” and 12 “Holds.”

On Aug. 13, Emily Field from Barclays PLC (BCS) maintained a “Hold” rating on BIIB, with a price target of $200.
The mean price target of $236 represents a 6.5% premium to BIIB’s current price levels. The Street-high price target of $300 suggests a notable upside potential of 35.4%.
