The space economy is moving beyond rockets. Governments increasingly want interconnected satellite networks that can move enormous amounts of data securely and quickly, creating opportunities for companies that can build not only launch vehicles but also the infrastructure operating in orbit.
That shift is important for investors because a successful space company may ultimately capture more value from spacecraft, communications, and defense systems than from launches alone. Rocket Lab (RKLB) is positioning itself for exactly that opportunity. Its latest U.S. Space Force contract is only worth $12 million, but the technology it will put into orbit could prove far more valuable than the initial award suggests.

A Small Contract With a Big Customer
On Aug. 18, Rocket Lab announced that the U.S. Space Force had selected it as one of five vendors for the Space Data Network Consortium. The company received two delivery orders worth a combined $12 million to design, test, and demonstrate secure optical communications between satellites and ground systems. Rocket Lab will conduct an in-orbit demonstration using a Photon spacecraft in 2027.
The backdrop is important. In May, Space Systems Command awarded SpaceX (SPCX) a $2.29 billion contract for the SDN Backbone, a proliferated low-Earth-orbit constellation designed to provide secure, high-capacity, low-latency data transport for the military. The Space Force says the network is intended to become a core communications layer connecting sensors and weapons systems worldwide.
That makes Rocket Lab's $12 million award look less like an endpoint and more like an audition.
The Space Force's broader plan also anticipates bringing additional vendors onto the network as commercial technologies mature. A June budget request identified nearly $1.5 billion for the SDN Backbone and included $800 million specifically for bringing additional vendors into the program.
That's where the potential payoff begins.
Photon Could Become More Valuable
Rocket Lab isn't simply selling another launch. It is putting a Photon spacecraft into a military communications architecture and proving that its systems can communicate securely with other satellites and ground infrastructure.
Optical communications use lasers to transmit data between satellites at high speeds, potentially providing the bandwidth and resilience needed for increasingly data-hungry defense networks. The Space Force describes the SDN as an optically interconnected mesh designed for high-capacity, low-latency communications.
Rocket Lab already has a head start here. The company acquired optical-communications specialist Mynaric in April, adding laser-communications technology to its spacecraft and component portfolio.
Getting that technology flight-tested inside the SDN architecture could make Photon more valuable for future government and commercial programs. The $12 million is the revenue investors can count on today. The more interesting number is the potential value of the contracts that could follow successful demonstrations.
The Stock Still Carries Plenty of Risk
Granted, Rocket Lab isn't cheap. Shares have gained about 9% in 2026 and 86% over the past year, even after falling roughly 50% from their May $151 high.
The valuation may have gotten ahead of the business. Rocket Lab was still reporting an adjusted EBITDA loss in its first-quarter 2026 guidance, while its $2.2 billion backlog and $200.3 million of quarterly revenue showed that the underlying business was expanding rapidly. Revenue rose 63.5% year-over-year (YoY) in that quarter.
That combination makes RKLB a volatile stock, particularly while the company develops its Neutron rocket and invests aggressively for future growth. But investors shouldn't confuse volatility with a broken thesis.
Rocket Lab is building an increasingly integrated space business spanning launch, spacecraft, components, communications, and defense. The $397 million Space Force Flatellite contract announced earlier in August is another example of that expansion.
