Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (VRTX) is a biotechnology company that develops innovative medicines for serious diseases, including cystic fibrosis (CF), sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia, and acute pain.
Moreover, the company is building beyond its approved treatments with potential therapies targeting genetic and other complex conditions, including kidney, metabolic, and neuromuscular diseases.
With a market cap of around $134 billion, Vertex has plenty of muscle behind its name, and its stock performance has certainly reflected that strength. The shares have gained 41.3% over the past 52 weeks, comfortably beating the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which returned 20.2% during the same period.
The momentum has carried into 2026, with Vertex shares climbing 21.8% year-to-date (YTD) while the S&P 500 has gained 12.6%. The stock has also outperformed the broader healthcare sector, as the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) has gained 28.5% over the past 52 weeks and 13.5% in 2026.
The outperformance reflected strong execution across Vertex’s portfolio. The company’s most recent Q2 FY2026 results highlighted continued leadership in CF, alongside accelerating growth in sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia, and acute pain. Vertex’s top line rose 12.5% year over year (YOY) to $3.33 billion in Q2, driven by sustained demand for its CF treatments and growing contributions from newer therapies.
Ahead of the results, Vertex also continued advancing its pending acquisition of Crinetics, a biopharmaceutical company focused on treatments for endocrine and metabolic disorders. The deal would further broaden Vertex’s long-term pipeline and complement its existing portfolio.
Building on its strong performance, Vertex raised its FY2026 revenue guidance to $13.1 billion–$13.2 billion, up from $12.95 billion–$13.1 billion. The revised outlook reflects continued growth in its CF business, while newer therapies for blood disorders and acute pain are expected to contribute at least $500 million in combined non-CF revenue.
For FY2026 ending in December, analysts expect diluted EPS of $16.86, representing a 2.4% YOY increase. Vertex has another encouraging statistic in its corner, having beaten EPS estimates in each of the last four quarters.
That performance has translated into a largely positive Wall Street view, with VRTX stock currently carrying an overall “Moderate Buy” rating. Among 30 analysts covering the stock, 21 assign a “Strong Buy” rating, two recommend “Moderate Buy,” six recommend “Hold,” and one analyst has issued a “Strong Sell” rating, leaving the bulls with a clear numbers advantage.
Three months ago, 25 analysts rated VRTX stock a “Strong Buy,” so enthusiasm has softened slightly. However, the broader sentiment remains positive, keeping Vertex in favorable territory.
The confidence showed up on Tuesday, August 11, when Jefferies analyst Akash Tewari maintained a “Buy” rating on VRTX stock. He also raised his price target from $610 to $633, reflecting confidence in Vertex’s pipeline and favorable risk-reward profile.
Wall Street optimism continued on Wednesday, August 12, when RBC Capital analyst Brian Abrahams maintained an “Outperform” rating on VRTX stock with a $570 price target. His view reflected confidence in Vertex’s pipeline and core business strength after solid Q2 results and the company’s raised outlook.
To that end, the average price target of $560.65 indicates potential upside of 1.6%. Meanwhile, the Street High target of $672 suggests a gain of 21.7% from current levels.
