Live Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Futures Up On Friday, CFTC Confirms Long Liquidation Earlier

Front month live cattle futures ended the session with gains of $0.55 to $1.15. Cash trade for the week picked up after light action during the past few holiday weeks. Sales were wide ranging early from $134 to $139, though USDA mentioned the market began to settle near $135-$136 in the South and mainly $137 in the North. Dressed trade was mainly $218 for the week. Feeder cattle spent time on both sides of UNCH during the Friday session. At the close, the front months were 12 to 35 cents in the red. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was down another 20 cents on 1/12 to $162.01.   

CFTC data showed spec traders were 10,405 contracts less net long in live cattle during the week that ended 1/11. That was mostly long liquidation, though 3.9k new spec shorts were also added. That left the group 61,941 contracts net long, their weakest in 9-weeks. As for feeders, managed money was 856 contracts less net long at 6,470.
