After spiking higher on Tuesday, lean hogs ended the midweek session $0.42 to $0.72 in the red. April futures closed at $99.90 on a 27 cent gain yesterday, and face a the final trade day with still 9,642 contracts open. The National Average Afternoon Base Hog price for Wednesday was $1.88 weaker to $97.79. CME’s Lean Hog Index for April 8 was another 43 cents lower to $99.63.
Pork cutout futures were 37 to 75 cents weaker on Wednesday, though April also gained 87 cents ahead of expiration. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout Value for Wednesday was up by $1.73 to $108.53. USDA estimated FI hog slaughter at 1.42m head for the week through Wednesday. That is up 12k from last week, but trails the same week last year by 25,000.Â
