Front month lean hog futures were up by triple digits on Wednesday, save for an 80 cent drop in the Feb contract. USDA’s National Average Afternoon Base hog price for Wednesday was $14.01 higher to $86.36. The CME Lean Hog Index from 1/31 was another $0.99 higher to $83.14.
Pork cutout futures also faded in the Feb contract, while the other front months went home $0.62 to $1.25 higher on Wednesday. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout Value was $3.47 higher in the PM report after a $3.47 boost. Federally inspected hog slaughter for the week through Wednesday was estimated at 1.387 million head. That compares to 1.394m head last week and 1.463m head during the same week last year.
