The October fat cattle contract settled 27 cents higher and have to stick close to cash because they are still in the delivery process. The other front months went home 10 to 52 cents in the red. USDA confirmed light Southern trade on Thursday near $145. Confirmed cash sales in the North and WCB have been $146 - $148. There were two sales at $145 on the Thursday FCE for 449 head of the 1,148 head listed. The unsold cattle faced $145 - $146 asks and $144 - $145 bids. Feeder cattle futures closed the day 57 to 75 cents in the red on Thursday. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 10/12 was $174.03 down by $1.01.Â
Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were mixed in the PM report with a 13 cent pullback in Choice and a $1.60 bounce in Select. The federally inspected cattle slaughter was estimated at 511k head for the week through Thursday, up by 1,000 head from last week and 34k head from the same week last year. Â 384k head for the week through Wednesday. That is up 1,000 head from last week and is 28,000 head more than the same week last year.Â
