Lean Hogs (Pit) Futures Market News and Commentary

Triple Digit Strength for hog Market

Lean hog futures ended the day $1.15 to $2.05 in the black. Monday morning’s National Average Base Hog price for Monday afternoon was $106.25 after a $6.72 drop. CME’s Lean Hog Index for 5/19 is up 80 cents to $101.17.  

The monthly Cold Storage report showed pork stocks were 530.244m lbs in April. That was a monthly boost of 9% and was 16% above April 2021. Belly stocks specifically were 58.7m lbs, more than double last year, as a 23 month high. 

Pork cutout futures closed $1.35 to $1.70 in the black on Monday. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout value $107.05 in the PM report, down by 6 cents. CME’s Fresh Bacon Index for the week that ended 5/20 was $195.12, up by $8.27. USDA estimates Monday’s federally inspected hog slaughter at 473k head. That is 3,000 head above last week and 6,000 head below the same week last year.
