Stocks Give Up Early Gains and Close Mostly Lower on Growth Concerns and Weakness in Energy Stocks

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Monday closed down -0.18%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed down -0.28%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed up +0.02%.

U.S. stock indexes on Monday gave up an early advance and closed mostly lower on global economic concerns along with a plunge in crude oil prices that weighed on energy companies. Stocks on Monday initially opened higher on optimism about Q2 corporate earnings results along with the improved prospects that the Senate will pass the $550 billion infrastructure package later this week.

Sep T-notes (ZNU21) on Monday closed up +17.5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-1/2 week low of 1.148%.  Concerns about global economic growth gave T-notes a boost after the China July manufacturing PMI fell -0.5 to a 1-1/2 year low of 50.4, and after the U.S. July ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly fell -1.1 to a 6-month low of 59.5.  A rally in German bunds also underpinned T-note prices after the 10-year German...
