Coffee Posts Moderate Losses as Costa Rican Coffee Exports Jump

July arabica coffee (KCN23) on Friday closed down -2.75 (-1.50%), and July ICE robusta coffee (RMN23) closed down -30 (-1.15%).

Coffee prices Friday gave up an early advance and turned lower on signs of bigger supplies from Central America.  The Costa Rican Coffee Institute reported that Costa Rican May coffee exports jumped +39% y/y to 140,142 bags.  A stronger dollar Friday also undercut coffee prices.

Coffee prices Friday initially moved higher after the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) climbed to a 1-week high against the dollar.  A stronger real discourages export selling from Brazil's coffee producers.

An excessive long position by funds of robusta futures could provide fuel for any long liquidation pressures.  Friday's weekly Commitment of Trader’s (COT) report showed funds boosted their net-long robusta coffee positions by 849 in the week ended May 30 to 43,854, a 16-month high.
