Lean Hogs Futures Market News and Commentary
Lean hog futures were weaker on the day, with front months leading the charge, down $3.15 to $4.00. Other contracts were down $1.10 to 2.70. The USDA’s National Average Base Hog price was $119.19 in the Tuesday afternoon report, up $13.58 from the previous day’s report. The August 12th CME Lean Hog Index was down 22 cents to $121.71.
Front month pork cutout futures are down $1.27. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout value was down $3.76 to $121.15 in the Tuesday PM report. All cuts were reported lower, with the belly leading the way, down $11.89. Federally inspected hog slaughter on Tuesday was estimated at 476,000, bringing the weekly total to 918,000 following a revision to Monday. That is 14,000 head below last week and 28,000 head fewer vs. the same week last year.
