Centerra suspends work at Pennsylvania metallurgical facility after explosion

TORONTO - Centerra Gold suspended operations at its Langeloth metallurgical facility in Pennsylvania after an explosion at the facility on Thursday night. The company says nobody was killed, but two contractors were taken to hospital with injuries and two employees were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.  Centerra says the explosion happened at about 6:15 p.m. local time on Thursday after an uncontrolled mixture of chemicals leading to an uncontained chemical reaction adjacent to the acid plant. The Langeloth operation, about 40 kilometres west of Pittsburgh, is part of the company's molybdenum business. It processes molybdenum concentrate and refines it into finished products. Centerra operates mines in Canada, the U.S. and Turkey and also owns the Kemess project in B.C. and the Goldfield project in Nevada.
