TORONTO - Strength in the base metals sector helped Canada's main stock index gain more than 100 points in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 104.63 points at 31,595.48.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 488.85 points at 48,546.60. The S&P 500 index was down 22.00 points at 6,864.68, while the Nasdaq composite was down 244.34 points at 23,409.82.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.63 cents US compared with 72.28 cents US on Wednesday.
The January crude oil contract was down US$1.23 at US$57.23 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$56.40 at US$4,281.10 an ounce.
