HALIFAX - Parks Canada says the cost of fully restoring the now-closed main lodge at the Keltic Lodge golf resort in Cape Breton is estimated at almost $70 million.
Citing a third-party study, the federal agency says the historic hotel inside Cape Breton Highlands National Park is deteriorating and requires upgrades to its electrical and heating systems.
The study says there is a $58-million option to partially restore the Tudor-style building, or it could be torn down for $11 million.
The federal agency says no decisions or funding commitments have been made.
As well, Parks Canada says a federal review determined the 75-year-old building does not meet the threshold to be designated as a heritage building.
The entire Keltic Lodge complex and adjacent Cape Breton Highlands Links golf course remain under a long-term lease to Ontario-based GolfNorth Properties.
"Parks Canada is in discussions with GolfNorth regarding the terms and conditions of the lease, and both parties must be in agreement before any action is taken on the main lodge," Parks Canada said in a statement.
“No decisions have been made about the future of the … main lodge.”
