Front month live cattle futures ended Thursday’s session mixed, with October gaining 12 cents to Dec and Feb’s weakness. The back months were also higher on the day, but gained less than 12 cents. Central Stockyards’ Thursday FCE only had 866 head listed, with no sales between $140-$141.25 bids and $142-$144 asks. USDA reported strong volumes for Thursday’s cash market, with trades mostly steady to $1 higher - ~$141 in the South, and $142-$145 in the North. Feeder cattle futures firmed on Thursday, but closed off their highs on 30 to 45 cent gains. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $1.17 higher to $180.31 on 9/7.
Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were lower in the PM report on Thursday, tightening the spread to $21.97. Choice was down $3.33 and Select dropped $1.47. USDA estimated the week’s FI cattle slaughter at 385k head through Thursday, compared to 366k head during the same week last year.
