The first trade day of the new week ended with front month live cattle futures 17 to 82 cents in the red. April futures stayed in an 80 cent range on the day, though June was down by as much as $1.47 at one point. Feeder cattle futures closed the Monday session 12 to 75 cents in the red. March feeders expire on Thursday. Cash cattle remains unestablished through Monday, last week’s action was mostly near $138. The 3/25 CME Feeder Cattle Index was 29 cents higher to $155.11.
USDA quoted Wholesale Boxed Beef prices higher on Monday, with a $1.23 increase for Choice and a $4.18 bump in Select. Federally inspected cattle slaughter was estimated as 124,000 head for Monday. That is up by 7k yr/yr and is 5k ahead of last week’s pace through Monday. Â
