DEC-MAR CORN SPREAD (ZCZ26-ZCH27)
The corn market has been on a tear lately. As a matter of fact, the March ’27 contract (ZCH27) made a new 52-week high today of 520 ¾. Corn is not alone as the grain market as a whole has been very strong. Corn, in particular, may have many reasons that it might continue to rally, especially in the short run. A couple examples of this would be things like the yields are expected to be lower in Illinois and there is a good possibility of some severe upcoming thunderstorms in states like Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The Dec-Mar Corn Spread (ZCZ26-ZCH27) trended down from March 16th’s high of -8½ until July 17th. From July 17th until yesterday this spread traded sideways between -16 and -15. It traded -16 in thirteen of those trading sessions without trading lower than -16. This entire time ZCZ26-ZCH27 settled below the 14-day and the 21-day moving averages. Today it finally broke through that by opening and settling above both of these moving averages.
Nothing is always in the commodity futures grain spreads, but in general, these spreads are directional. What I mean by that is the front month will likely lead the way. So, if Corn rallies, Corn Spreads will commonly go up as well. Because of the bullish corn market we appear to be in as a result of fundamental and technical data, I think it might be a good time to buy the DEC-MAR Corn Spread (ZCZ26-ZCH27). We can hopefully lean on the -16 cent price level where it bounced off of thirteen times and put a short stop in just below there.
I suggest that when the market opens this evening, try to buy the DEC-MAR Corn Spread (ZCZ26-ZCH27) at -15 or better. If you are not able to buy it at -15 on the opening, leave a resting (GTC) order in to buy it at that level.
If you are able to buy this spread, risk 2 cents or $100 to make 4 cents or $200 Per Spread, plus fees and commissions.
