Sanofi was incorporated under the laws of France in 1994 as a société anonyme, a form of limited liability company. It is a healthcare company, engaged in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of healthcare products. Its principal activities include Pharmaceuticals, Human Vaccines via Sanofi Pasteur, and Animal Health via Merial. It also operates through the following platforms: Emerging Markets, Diabetes Solutions, Vaccines, Consumer Health Care (CHC), Animal Health, Genzyme, and Other Innovative Products. The Pharmaceuticals segment covers research, development, production and marketing of medicines, including activities acquired with Genzyme. The Vaccines segment is wholly dedicated to vaccines, including research, development, production and marketing. This segment includes Sanofi Pasteur MSD joint venture with Merck & Co., Inc. in Europe. The Animal Health segment comprises the research, development, production and marketing activities of Merial, which offers medicines and vaccines for a wide variety of animal species. Its competitors include Novo Nordisk, Merck, Eli Lilly, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Shire, Pfizer, Biogen Idec, Teva and Merck Serono, Bayer, Roche, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Fresenius Medical Care, among others. The Company's products and manufacturing facilities are subject to significant government regulations and approvals.
