The Jackson, Michigan-based company said it had net income of 92 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 93 cents per share.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 86 cents per share.
The energy company posted revenue of $2.02 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.82 billion.
CMS Energy expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.56 to $3.60 per share.
